In 2015, the United Nations updated its Millennium Goals to define a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be shared by communities, globally. In addition to the objectives related to planetary boundaries, the SDGs include social objectives in various areas, ranging from poverty and education to economic prosperity. The SDGs are intended to enable both nations and corporations to identify common purposes and opportunities for action.
ICL’s core commitment is to create impactful solutions for humanity’s challenges in global food and agriculture (SDG 2), and industrial markets (SDG 9). We recognize that this is a formidable challenge for the chemical and mining industries, which ICL is a part of.
The SDG that emerged as the most significant is directly connected to ICL’s core business — Zero Hunger. From our updated analysis for 2020, Climate Action has become an important SDG that needs to be addressed. Other SDGs with a strong connection to ICL activities were found to be: Climate Action, Affordable and Clean Energy, Clean Water and Sanitation, Decent Work, Good Health, and Responsible Consumption and Production. The findings also indicate that many of ICL’s business leaders see a direct connection between Zero Hunger and No Poverty. Other SDGs mentioned by some participating in the discussions were Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Life on Land, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Environmental matters received more attention from ICL’s value chain over the past year. ICL will continue discussions with the purpose of strengthening its alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
