Sustainable Solutions

ICL’s RD&I is looking to the UN’s SDGs as guiding principles for further development. The Company is focused on finding solutions that increase the positive global impact of ICL’s business - through its existing and new products. \

The SDGs serve as guiding principles in ICL’s quest for new products. This is especially true for SDG 2 – Zero Hunger. ICL has a part in ensuring global food security, from growing food with advanced fertilizers to producing alternative proteins and products that preserve food. Such solutions include bio-stimulants, soil health management, controlled release and other high performance fertilizers that are integrated with sophisticated irrigation technology and precision agriculture.

New products that ICL is offering include pHix-up which balances the pH in the gut of cows, contributing to their health, increasing milk production and higher quality of milk.

2.4
By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
14.1
By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.

The Company’s systematic approach is not solely in the areas of food and fertilizers. ICL is seeking to support and develop products for new clean, environmentally friendly initiatives, such as the unique chemistry required for grid-scale renewable energy storage and various circular economy solutions

7.2
By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

ICL’s products are also used by the food, pharma and personal care industries. For Example, ICL produces Magnesium Oxides, Hydroxides and Carbonates that are used in the production of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations in the form of tablets, powders and liquid suspensions. They are also used in the production of magnesium salts such as citrate, stearate, amino-acid chelates and lactate for pharma and nutra purposes. In addition, recently developed a new product line for the personal care industry. Its CareMagⓇ product line is used in deodorants, skin and baby care products. It is a natural, non-toxic and hypoallergenic raw material based on magnesium from Dead Sea salt.

Significant effort is also being made to improve every aspect of the life cycle of ICL products, from environmental planning during the product development phase through efficient logistics and  training and support of business partners and end users. These include local distributors, farmers, suppliers and others that may have a significant impact on the environmental impact and performance of ICL products. ICL is in the process of calculating its carbon footprint for its products and already done so for more than a 100 of its products. It is also evaluating the opportunities on reducing these footprints.

ICL developed SAFR®, a systematic framework to allow clients to assess various flame retardants using a scientific-based approach to select the appropriate product.
