Innovation @ ICL

Research, Development and innovation (RD&I) are among the cornerstones of ICL’s business and are vital to the Company’s continued growth. ICL is developing new production processes, applications, formulations, and products for its diverse markets, including agriculture, food and engineered materials. ICL views the UN’s Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) as guiding principles, and ensures that sustainable criteria are considered and addressed as part of ICL’s RD&I process. \

Over the years, ICL has developed and marketed many innovative products and solutions, accumulating expertise in diverse technologies.

Going forward, ICL aims to continue expanding, balancing and strengthening its businesses by, growing its specialty businesses through RD&I, organic initiatives, joint ventures and acquisitions.

‘BIG’ - Business Innovation for Growth

ICL is harnessing the strengths, knowledge and expertise that exist within its own organization to innovate. It is leveraging its internal ecosystem to create an internal accelerator, BIG, a platform where its employees, from all regions, can participate in the innovation process. 

The BIG initiative coalesces the processes, roles and management's attention. By creating a cross-functional view across ICL, BIG encourages a cross-fertilization of ideas among the Company’s employees in all divisions. Ultimately, BIG is being used as a portfolio management tool to execute the most promising ideas and projects. ICL has embarked on this journey building on its strong foundation. Transformational innovation starts by stringing together ideas and projects to create growth for ICL.

Food security is one of ICL’s focus areas. As such, advanced crop nutrition is one of the main issues. This includes unique and biodegradable coating, nutrient sensing, growth enhancers, utilization of digital technologies and fixation. In other aspects of food security, ICL is focusing on alternative protein solutions.  

Another focus area is advanced materials, including energy storage and low energy consumption applications, construction, flame retardants, biocides, urban mining and circular economy.

ICL is constantly looking for innovative solutions in its plants and operations. The Company has launched multiple initiatives to innovate and create excellence in its production processes, moving towards Industry 4.0.

Carbon Challenge

ICL created a Carbon Challenge for its global employees. Employees were invited to contribute ideas on how to reduce direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions, how to capture, utilize, and store carbon dioxide, and how to reduce the carbon intensity of ICL's products. 81 ideas were received and forwarded to the relevant business units for further evaluation and testing.
